Sailing west, degrees of latitude increase. Accordingly, West Tisbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah, occupying the southwest region of the Vineyard, are “up” Island.
This is the rural territory from which we take our name, Beetlebung. Dry stone walls enclose fields of grazing livestock. The terrain is wild. The open ocean is ever visible. Men here still live by going out to sea in small vessels for weeks and months to fish. Families that settled here two and three hundred years ago, Wampanoag natives from thousands of years ago, live, work, and prosper here.
